Arafura Games Ambassadors announced on 100 day countdown

Office of the Chief Minister

Today marks the 100 day countdown until the 2019 Arafura Games officially begin and preparations are well and truly underway.

NT sports legend and Local ABC radio sports broadcaster Charlie King will join Darwin comedian and founder of Amiable Communications Amy Hetherington as the very first Ambassadors of the 2019 Arafura Games.

The Ambassador’s role is a voluntary role aimed at increasing awareness of the Games, encouraging community support and helping promote the Games through their own networks.

The Arafura Games provide Territory athletes with the opportunity to compete against their international counterparts and also puts Darwin on the world map - helping to grow the economy by boosting visitation to the Territory and strengthening business ties across the globe.

A total of 17 sports disciplines will feature in the Arafura Games, with Basketball 5v5 and Pro Hustle, plus Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball just to name a few.

Around 1500 athletes are expected to compete in the 2019 Arafura Games, with just over 500 athletes currently registered, representing 40 nations across the globe.

The Territory Labor Government made an election promise to bring back the Arafura Games after they were scrapped by the former CLP government in 2011.

The Games will be from April 26 to May 4, 2019, and a number of volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles. To find out more visit arafuragames.nt.gov.au
