Cooler City: Cavenagh Street Stage 2 works begin

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is revitalising the Darwin CBD through cooling and greening initiatives that reduce the impact of heat– making our CBD a more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.

Stage two of the Cavenagh Street Heat Mitigation Project is in full swing and will see the planting of new trees along the street and the installation of a heat reflective road surface to reduce pavement temperature.

Heat mapping has shown Cavenagh Street is one of the hottest locations in our CBD, and this project is delivering innovative techniques to mitigate that heat and cool the city.

These works will complement the Cavenagh Street shade structure which was completed in late 2018 – the vines planted with the structure are now starting to climb, it is anticipated that full coverage will take up to 18 months.

The project forms part of the Government’s $100 million commitment towards the Darwin City Deal initiatives, which aims to grow our population, create a more vibrant city centre and support increased investment and business growth.

Stage 2 works are scheduled to minimise impact to surrounding businesses and are due for completion by late May 2019.

Quotes from Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government is revitalising Darwin’s CBD through transformative projects that will position Darwin as a cool, modern, tropical destination that will attract more people and create jobs.

“This heat mitigation trial forms an important part of our goal to create a greener and cooler city, while unlocking Darwin’s potential as an attractive, bustling and connected capital.

“After work on Stage 2 is complete a study will be undertaken on the results of heat mitigation measures in the area, which lends itself to the potential for the mitigation methods to be used in other locations across Darwin’s CBD.

“This trial has the potential to hallmark the Territory as a leader in heat mitigation projects and research.”
