Creating Jobs: John Stokes Redevelopment A Step Closer

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government’s $45 million redevelopment of John Stokes Square, which will support the Territory’s construction industry and create local jobs, has taken a significant step forward with the release of a tender for contractors to clear the site.

Work has already started on the design of a new Police Station, with Jackman Gooden Architects commissioned to prepare a concept ready for construction later this year.

The redevelopment will see the existing 75 public housing dwellings replaced with new homes specifically designed for seniors, or people living with disabilities.

The relocation of the Nightcliff Police Station to a new purpose-built facility will assist police in keeping the community safe.

This work will create a reinvigorated area, providing a pedestrian friendly link between the Nightcliff Village and Nightcliff Shopping Centre, open space and the expansion of local services.

Demolition is expected to begin in late May and the Northern Territory Government will consult with the community to find the best design option for this important project.

Quotes from the Local Member for Nightcliff, Natasha Fyles:

“Creating local jobs is the number one priority for this Government and this $45 million redevelopment will support around 240 jobs.

“This is what industry has been asking for, creating real certainty for their workforce, enabling business to plan ahead – we are delivering on that.

“Every Territorian has a right to feel safe and expect their homes, businesses and property to be secure.

“The John Stokes Facility is a known hotspot for crime and anti-social behaviour and, as the Local Member, I have heard clearly the concerns from businesses and residents for a redeveloped precinct to improve safety, security and the local amenity.”
