The Territory Labor Government is on track to deliver more remote housing than any previous government in the history of the NT.
Since coming to Government we have built and upgraded more than 1320 homes - works that have changed the housing landscape in remote areas.
Senator Scullion was completely silent when the CLP failed to address the shocking state of remote housing. They brought remote housing to a near-standstill, building just one new dwelling and replacing or upgrading only 487 homes from June 2014 to June 2016.
•Under the last two years of the CLP Government and a silent CLP Senator Scullion, one new dwelling was built. This Government has built 179 new dwellings.
•Under the last two years of the CLP Government and a silent CLP Senator Scullion, 108 replacement dwellings were built. This Government has built 177 replacement dwellings.
•Under the last two years of the CLP Government and a silent CLP Senator Scullion, 379 upgrades were completed. Through Room to Breathe and upgrades we have completed work on 969 dwellings.
Nigel Scullion and the CLP also failed to plan for new works, leaving it to the Territory Labor Government to build 293 serviced lots and fund and plan a further 1091. The Federal Government has refused to fund critical land servicing.
The NT Government has engaged with Land Councils and peak bodies and, most importantly, directly with remote community residents through our Local Decision Making process. Community involvement is at the core of our planning, design and works. We will continue to engage directly with Territorians in remote communities to ensure the program suits residents’ needs.
In contrast, Senator Scullion has delivered a million dollars to Land Councils but is $1.1 billion short on his promised commitment for housing which should have been finalised at least 12 months ago.
Senator Scullion’s tantrums, aimed at anyone within earshot, only serve to shore up his legacy as the most obstructive and divisive Indigenous Affairs Minister who will soon walk away from the job without ever having contributed a red cent towards remote housing in the Northern Territory during the five and-a-half years he has held the portfolio.
