Parliament Resumes: Delivering on Election Promises and Creating Jobs

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is working for Territorians with a solid schedule of legislation to be introduced and debated in Parliament over the next two weeks.

We promised to create generational change, tackle the Territory’s alcohol problems and create jobs, and we are delivering.

The March sittings will see the following bills before Parliament:

  • The Electoral Legislation Amendment Bill 2018

  • The Health Services Amendment Bill 2018

  • The Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2018

  • The Liquor Amendment Bill 2018

  • The Water Legislation Amendment Bill 2019

  • The Petroleum Legislation Amendment Bill 2018

We promised to build safer communities and we are delivering with strong new legislation to protect our emergency services workers (the Criminal Code Amendment Bill 2018) and increase Police and Liquor Commission powers (the Liquor Amendment Bill 2018).

The latter provides important reforms to help Police crackdown on the secondary supply of alcohol, which causes so much harm in our community, and will empower the Liquor Commission to hold public hearings.

We are also delivering on our promise to take an evidence-based approach to hydraulic fracturing. The Petroleum Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 includes reforms needed to implement recommendations from the Pepper Enquiry. This will pave the way for exploration to begin and create jobs within a strong regulatory framework.

Quote from Leader of Government Business, Natasha Fyles:

“The Territory Labor Government continues to deliver on our election promise to create jobs, invest in our future and build stronger, safer communities across the Territory.
