Supporting our Pastoral Sector: $25,000 Rebates for Drought-Affected NT Farmers

Office of the Chief Minister

Government rebates of up to $25,000 are now available to eligible drought-affected Northern Territory farmers, for the purchase and installation of emergency water infrastructure.

NT Minister for Primary Industries and Resources Paul Kirby will today attend the 35th annual Northern Territory Cattlemen’s Association (NTCA) conference in Darwin, where he will outline how eligible farmers can apply for the rebates.

The Australian Government has made $3 million available to Northern Territory farmers as part of its On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme, which stemmed from the 2018 National Drought Summit.

The scheme will be administered by the NT Department of Primary Industries and Resources and will support producers to invest in new livestock watering facilities such as bores, piping, tanks, troughs, pumps and fittings to better manage livestock access to water during dry weather conditions.

Mr Kirby will today take the opportunity to listen to farmers at the year’s largest gathering of livestock producers at this year’s NTCA conference.

The theme of this year’s conference is “High Steaks” and discussions will focus on the current opportunities and challenges faced by Northern Australia’s cattle industry.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Primary Industries and Resources, Paul Kirby.

“The Territory Labor Government’s number one priority is jobs for Territorians and we recognise the critical role the pastoral industry plays in regional economies.

“Feed conditions have dramatically deteriorated in several NT districts in the past four months, with the rainfall the lowest on record in many districts, particularly in the Barkly Tablelands and Central Australia.

“The Territory Labor Government thanks the Australian Government for this helping hand for our livestock farmers and is proud to administer the scheme through DPIR.

“The scheme will help boost animal welfare and support a healthy pastoral sector, which, in turn contributes to a healthy Territory economy.”
