Local Artists to Join International Music Acts at BASSINTHEGRASS

Office of the Chief Minister

Darwin-based band Tapestry and musician Kyle Maher have been announced as the two local artists to perform at the 2019 People’s Choice BASSINTHEGRASS music festival at Mindil Beach in just over two weeks’ time.

This year’s judging panel, made up of Nook Events Founder/CEO James Gough, Off the Leash Entertainment Reporter Tamara Howie and MusicNT Executive Director Mark Smith, said it wasn’t an easy decision with over 25 talented Territory artists vying for the coveted opportunity to perform on stage at BASSINTHEGRASS.

Approximately 10,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event, giving local artists widespread exposure and the chance to build contacts and play in front of music industry representatives from right across Australia and New Zealand.

Quotes from Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:

“It was fantastic to see so many Territorians apply for the chance to play at this year’s BASSINTHEGRASS and I’d like to congratulate the winners Tapestry and Kyle Maher for earning their spot on the festival’s stage.

“BASS is another opportunity to showcase the Territory’s exceptional local artists.

“Getting exposure and playing in front of large crowds is so important for our local artists and I’m thrilled that we can give up-and-coming musicians this opportunity every year at BASSINTHEGRASS.

“With a boost as part of the Territory Government’s $103 million Turbocharging Tourism stimulus, BASSINTHEGRASS 2019 will be the largest music festival ever held in the NT.

“The expansion of BASSINTHEGRASS is fantastic for the local Darwin community who will not only see the tourism benefits from an expanded festival but also now have even more music and entertainment to experience themselves.”

Quotes from MusicNT Executive Director and BASSINTHEGRASS Local Artists Panel Member, Mark Smith:

“There has been significant growth in the Northern Territory music sector, which has been demonstrated by the number and quality of applications this year. In particular, to have Caiti Baker announced as part of the line-up is testament to the strength of Northern Territory music.

“Tapestry played at BASSINTHEGRASS in 2016 and have since headlined a national tour, secured management and interest from labels and now they’re bringing their show back to the biggest stage in the Territory.”

Quotes from Off The Leash Entertainment Reporter and BASSINTHEGRASS Local Artists Panel Member, Tamara Howie:

“A task like this is never easy and it was great to see such a diversity of sounds coming from musicians who call the Territory home.

“Performing at BASSINTHEGRASS is a really important opportunity for local acts. It offers more than a chance to perform on a grand stage to thousands of local music-lovers, it also allows an opportunity to network and build contacts with touring artists and industry figures.

“It is going to be exciting to see where these guys go to beyond the BASSINTHEGRASS stage.”
