BUDGET 19: Improving Living Conditions in the Bush

Office of the Chief Minister

In Budget 2019, the Territory Labor Government continues to deliver on its record $1.1billon investment into remote housing.

Since coming to Government we have built, extended and improved 1380 homes.

Budget 2019 will invest:

• $115.8 million for new remote housing builds

Increasing the number of homes in the bush and easing overcrowding.

• $43.9 million into our Room to Breathe program

Providing additional living areas such as bedrooms, verandas and bathrooms to existing homes – to ease overcrowding.

• $24.6 million to provide additional government employee housing

New housing for our remote employees including teachers, nurses and police.

Budget 2019 also includes $61.8 million to continue to develop and service new housing lots in remote communities with the inclusion of essential power, water and sewerage infrastructure making them ready to build on.

Quotes from Minister for Remote Housing and Community Development Gerry McCarthy:

“Our remote housing program is as much about job creation, training and skills development as it is about providing safe, healthy homes.”

“We have invested more in remote housing than any other NT Government – ever.

“Community consultation and local decision making has allowed tenants to be involved in the planning and design of building works.”

“Budget 2019 continues to deliver the Territory LaborGovernment’s $1.1billion promise to improve living conditions and the lives of thousands of remote Territorians.”
