More of the great Territory outdoors will soon be available to cyclists and walkers following the awarding of a tender to extend a path from Howard Springs to Coolalinga.

The new link will extend the shared path network from Palmerston through to the new shopping precinct at Coolalinga, giving Territorians healthier travel options.

The Territory Labor Government awarded the contract to THE Mining Pty Ltd for $3 million. The project will support more than 20 local jobs.

On average, more than 80 cyclists use the existing shared path between Palmerston and Howard Springs each day.

The new path will follow the route of the old National Australian Rail Corridor, promoting alternative travel options for residents, visitors and commuters between Coolalinga, Howard Springs, Palmerston and Darwin – significantly extending the regional shared path network.

The path will incorporate hand railings fabricated by Correctional Services, and heritage features which include the remaining structures of two original railway bridges and other elements of the National Australian Rail Corridor – acknowledging the history behind it.

For safety reasons, once the shared path is built, there will be no vehicle access along or across the path. However, a formal crossing will be in place where the path connects to Grice Crescent.
