Creating Jobs: Tender for the First Stage of Works to Richardson Park Released.

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government has released a tender for the first stage of works on Richardson Park, which will rejuvenate the space and make it more attractive for the community to enjoy.

Works to Richardson Park will provide an upgraded oval, including change rooms, which will be available for use by the Nightcliff Dragons and Brothers Rugby clubs and the broader community.

A new road near Richardson Park will also be constructed to facilitate, safer and more efficient access to Ludmilla Primary School.

The current facilities and infrastructure are in a state of disrepair.

Works will be completed in stages and support more than 30 local jobs:

  • Stage 1 - includes the demolition and disposal of five derelict buildings on the site.
  • Stage 2 - will include an extension to Richardson Drive, upgrade of the oval and the construction of ablution facilities.

Works are expected to commence in the coming months. Restricted access to the Richardson Park site will be in place for the duration of the first stage of works

The Northern Territory Government is supporting Rugby League in the Territory and has built the new Territory Rugby League Stadium in Marrara, establishing it as the home for Rugby League and NRL NT HQ.

The new facility will help grow rugby league in the Territory, including encouraging more women and girls to play and allow the code and local competition to be run from within its main stadium.

The Government will continue to work with NRL NT clubs on ensuring the history and significance of Richardson Parks is recognised and maintained, including the memorial for Mr John Mount, known as Shadow.

Quotes from the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government’s priority is local jobs, and this project is expected to support more 30 local jobs.

“We are listening to Territorians, local businesses and the sporting community, and will continue to work towards providing a better community space for all to enjoy.

“The CLP built no home for local Rugby League, whereas this Government has got on with the job and built a fantastic new home for local Rugby League – delivering on an election promise and creating local jobs for Territorians.”

Quotes from NRL NT General Manager, Nigel Roy:

“Whilst the NRL NT have established a new home for our sport at Territory Rugby League Stadium, the NRL NT welcomes the Northern Territory Governments investment to redevelop Richardson Park. The redevelopment will provide further opportunities for our clubs to continue to grow their Rugby League playing base.

“The NRL NT understands that Richardson Park holds a special place for many members of the Rugby League community, the proposed redevelopment will provide the opportunity for those members to remain connected to this facility in a sustainable manner well into the future.”
