Driving Visitation: A Race and Run this weekend in the Alice

Office of the Chief Minister

Alice Springs is gearing up to host visitors from around the globe for the 58th Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta and the Run Larapinta race this weekend.

Nearly 5,000 people are expected to attend the Henley on Todd Regatta - the only dry river bed boating race in the world.

The iconic Regatta is the major annual fundraiser for the three Rotary clubs in Alice Springs, who have collected over $1.7 million for Rotary since the sporting event began in 1962.

For those seeking a bit more of a challenge, Run Larapinta is a 4-day, 4-stage trail running race along the most spectacular sections of the Larapinta Trail with two-course distance options.

Now in its fifth year, Run Larapinta will host more than 200 ultra-runners, mostly from interstate and abroad, who will experience the Alice as both a cultural and adventure tourism destination.

The Run begins today. For more information visit www.RunLarapinta.com.au

“The Territory Labor Government is proud to support the annual Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta and Run Larapinta which attracts visitors annually to Central Australia for that Territory-only experience and gives the local economy a boost.”

Quote from Member for Braitling Dale Wakefield:

“The Henley on Todd puts Alice on the map and I’d like to wish event organisers all the very best for this year’s Regatta, noting this event would not be possible without the continued support of around 200 local volunteers.

“Run Larapinta is a drawcard for both recreational and elite runners who get to breathe in the beauty of the Red Centre while competing in a unique landscape.”

Quotes from 2019 Rotary Henley on Todd Regatta Commodore, Anjali Palmer:

“The Henley on Todd is one of the Territory’s most iconic and crazy events.

“We are pleased and grateful that the Northern Territory Government has recognised the tourism value that we bring to Central Australia and supported us with grants over the years.

“We can’t wait for another fun and crazy day in the Todd Riverbed and I look forward to seeing you all there and joining in the fun.”

Quote from Run Larapinta Event Director, John Jacoby:

“It’s a sign of the times and the popularity of both the Red Centre as an adventure tourism destination and the rise of ultra-running as a sport.”
