Facing North: Chief Minister Leads Industry Delegation to Canberra

Trade and investment opportunities in the Territory will be showcased when Chief Minister Michael Gunner leads a delegation of industry leaders to Canberra tomorrow.

The annual Facing North function will put the Territory and our economic opportunities before key decision makers in Canberra.

Representatives from more than 250 Territory businesses are participating in the event, which is a collaboration between the Darwin Major Business Group (DMBG) and Northern Territory Government.

This year’s Facing North event is strengthened by adding Forums and discussions on important Northern Territory job creating projects.

The forums will take place over two days where the Territory’s game changing industries will be discussed with Federal Ministers.

Darwin’s Ship Lift and marine services will be on the agenda with support gaining momentum with the Australian Industry Defence Network NT backing the project.

The Territory Government has committed $100 million for the $400 million project at East Arm. Additional funding is being sought through the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).

Other forum discussions will focus on major job creating projects for Territorians, such as the Darwin Cities Deal, Defence and National Security, Aboriginal Education, Natural Gas and Kakadu Tourism Development.

Quotes from the NT Chief Minister, Michael Gunner:

“Northern Australia and the Northern Territory are critical to the future prosperity and security of our Nation.

“Facing North is a strong demonstration of how Territory business, industry and government are working together to accelerate development of the North.

“There are key opportunities in our proximity to South-East Asia and China, and the benefits this can bring to the Territory and the broader national economy.

“The Northern Territory has an incredibly bright economic future within reach.

“This is why the Territory Government is investing in job creating infrastructure right across the Territory. This is why we are partnering with local business to deliver game changing projects. And this is why we are investing in not just our traditional industries of tourism, agriculture and mining – but creating new industries like a space base, renewables and the Ship Lift."

Quotes from the Darwin Major Business Member Michael Bridge:

“The Darwin Major Business Group together with the NT Government is pleased to host the third annual Facing North event at Parliament House in Canberra in early September.

“The event aims to focus the attention of members of federal Parliament on the strategic importance of developing the North and what we can offer the Australian economy”.
