BOULEVARD OF DARWIN’S DREAMS ALMOST OPEN

Office of the Chief Minister

The Garramilla Boulevard and Tiger Brennan Drive Stage 3 project is almost complete.

The final section of Garramilla Boulevard has been finished and the boulevard will open to traffic at lunchtime tomorrow, giving commuters a third entry point to travel to and from Darwin's CBD.

This section of Garramilla Boulevard includes a newly landscaped amphitheatre overlooking Frog Hollow Park, encouraging community and cultural events.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said he was pleased with the quick progress of the project.

“The overall project is expected to be completed more than nine months ahead of schedule,” Mr McCormack said.

“This is a landmark transport project that has supported hundreds of local jobs and will help unlock the potential of Darwin’s city centre.”

The Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler said that Garramilla Boulevard along with other important revitalising projects would make Darwin a much-loved destination for visitors, attracting new residents and encouraging broader investment.

"Garramilla Boulevard is an attractive, modern entry route into our city, and showcases Darwin's potential as Australia's Northern Capital and gateway to Asia. It is not just about creating a green, cool space to be used by the community. This vital link will reduce commuting times by dispersing traffic more equally throughout the CBD,” Ms Lawler said.

"The project has supported more than 540 local jobs, and contractor Territoria Civil has worked hard to complete the boulevard nine months ahead of schedule, which is exciting for Darwin and its future.

"Over 200 shading trees have been planted lining the new boulevard, as well as pathways for cyclists and pedestrians, seating and an outdoor amphitheatre for the community to enjoy."

City of Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the City of Darwin is proud to be a part of the Garramilla Boulevard project.

“The project has provided a unique opportunity for all levels of government to work together and we are delighted that it has been completed and delivered to the community so far ahead of schedule.”

"This major road provides an attractive and important additional access route into our city that will improve access and attract more people to the city centre,” said Mr Vatskalis.

Senator for the Northern Territory Sam McMahon said Garramilla Boulevard would showcase Darwin’s tropical appeal to tourists and investors.

“The Australian Government has committed $29.5 million to the Garramilla Boulevard and Tiger Brennan Drive Stage 3 project,” Dr McMahon said.

“This fantastic project will clear congestion, helping Darwin locals and visitors get to their destinations sooner and safer.”

Construction of the duplication of Tiger Brennan Drive is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

A family open day will be held at Frog Hollow Park near the new amphitheatre on Saturday 12 October 2019.

The Australian Government has committed $29.5 million to the Garramilla Boulevard and Tiger Brennan Drive Stage 3 project, with the Northern Territory Government committing $25 million and the City of Darwin committing a further $5 million.

Ends.
