Changes to Work Health and Safety legislation to be introduced to Parliament

Office of the Chief Minister

The Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Amendment Bill 2019 will be introduced during Parliamentary Sittings this week.

The Territory Labor Government believes every worker has the right to go to work and return home safely. This Bill aims to overhaul industrial manslaughter laws, ensuring all businesses will be penalised for reckless or negligent conduct leading to workplace fatalities.

Currently, only individuals can be charged with industrial manslaughter with no equivalent penalties for corporations.

Also during Sittings this week, the Youth Justice and Related Legislation Amendment Bill will be debated.

The Bill, which is part of the Government’s reform of the youth justice system, amends the Youth Justice Act 2005, the Bail Act 1992 and the Police Administration Act 1978 to make sure young people who do the wrong thing face the consequences – but importantly improves outcomes for young people who become involved in the youth justice system.

The Bill aims to remove barriers to youth diversion programs so that young people can face the consequences of their actions quicker. It will also provide a more effective bail application model.

Importantly, it also increases community safety.

Parliament will also debate the Environment Protection Bill and the Electoral Legislation Further Amendment Bill 2019.

Other Bills for introduction during Sittings this week are:

  • Local Government Bill 2019;
  • Mental Health and Related Services Amendment Bill 2019;
  • Firearms Legislation Amendment Bill 2019;
  • Evidence and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019; and
  • Sex Industry Bill 2019
