CBD Revitalisation: Continuing to Transform our City to Attract Tourists and Residents

Office of the Chief Minister

Building on the success of the 2019 Street Art Festival, the Territory Labor Government is calling on community groups, individuals, businesses, and non-profit organisations to bring forward ideas to continue to revitalise the Darwin CBD.

Revitalising the city is an important part of attracting more tourists and residents, making it a better place to live, work and visit, and transforming it into a world-class destination.

This latest initiative provides funding to those with ideas to further help develop the CBD. From a total funding pool of $200,000, ideas with merit and shortlisted by the Activate Darwin Board, are eligible for up to the maximum $20,000 grant. Final voting will then be opened up to a public vote.

Projects from the challenge will continue to support transformation in the city centre, in conjunction with work already underway.

CBD work and projects includes the Austin Lane connectivity project, the Cavenagh Street heat mitigation trials, Street Art Festival and the Laneway Series, and the recently announced State Square Master Plan.

The Transforming Public Spaces Challenge ideas contest is open until 30 September, entries can be submitted online at https://cbd.nt.gov.au.

Quotes from the Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby:

“The Territory Labor Government continues to make our Darwin CBD a more vibrant and attractive place for people to enjoy.

“We’ve seen vibrancy enhanced most recently through the resounding success of the Territory Government funded Darwin Street Art Festival.

“That’s why I’m excited about this challenge as it allows people to put forward their own ideas which they can see come to fruition with funding up to $20,000.

“Activate Darwin is delivering many different activities in the CBD which correlates with an increase of foot traffic to those areas, and it will be great to see what ideas are submitted from the community.”

To be attributed to Activate Darwin Transforming Public Spaces Subcommittee Chair, Jason Hanna:

“I am excited to hear ideas from the community and to focus on positive change within the City.

“This is a great opportunity for people to put forward ideas and turn them into a reality, with support from a skilled Board and team.

“The Transforming Public Spaces Challenge provides an opportunity for people who live and work in Darwin to drive change and create positive action for the City.

“Activate Darwin is a conduit between residents, businesses, Council and Government and will be able to provide support and mentorship to people who contribute ideas to the challenge.”
