New Electric Vehicle Strategy = New Economic and Business Opportunities

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is continuing to address climate risk and create new economic and business opportunities with the release of the Preparing the Northern Territory for Electric Vehicles Discussion Paper 2019.

Territorians are invited to have their say on how the Territory Labor Government can best support the uptake of electric vehicles across the Northern Territory.

With renewable energy and electric vehicles, the average NT household could reduce vehicle-running costs, making the cost of living cheaper for Territorians. This delivers benefits to Territorians and Territory businesses.

The Discussion Paper showcases the potential opportunities and barriers that need to be considered in the development of electric vehicle policy and infrastructure.

It focuses on battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, which are likely to represent the most significant changes in Australia’s vehicle fleet in the short and medium term.

The Paper also highlights passenger and light commercial vehicles, as these are the most likely to be the area with the greatest growth in the near future, and where Government involvement will be the most relevant.

Consultation closes Sunday 17 November 2019.

Quotes from the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, and Climate Change, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government is continuing to address climate change while creating new business and economic opportunities for Territorians.

“There is an increasing global trend of consumers who choose to purchase electric vehicles over standard combustion engine vehicles, and our Government wants to understand from Territorians how we can support an increase in electric vehicle uptake.

“The creation of an electric vehicle policy will support our Government’s actions on addressing climate risk to transition to a low-carbon economy. Responding to climate change will not only help us protect our environment, but will support this new industry and the jobs that come with it.”
