Acknowledging History: Bagot Road Flag Poles Tender Awarded

Office of the Chief Minister

In acknowledgement of Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory, including the traditional custodians, the Larrakia People, the Aboriginal flag will soon be flying over the Stuart Highway and Bagot Road intersection with a tender for construction now awarded.

The tender was awarded to local business Rubberduck Civil Worx Pty Ltd for more than $220,000 to assist in the creation of an attractive and vibrant entry point to Darwin city.

A third flag pole for the Aboriginal flag will be added and the existing flagpoles on both sides of the intersection will be consolidated to one safe and accessible location on the inbound side of the Stuart Highway.

A separate tender will be announced shortly to include the beautification of the area through landscaping and additional lighting.

Works are scheduled to commence in the coming weeks and be completed in early 2020.

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“This is an important entryway into our city, with one of the most used intersections in the Darwin region; including the Aboriginal flag sends a strong message about the type of city Darwin is – attractive and inclusive.”

Quotes attributed to the Member for Karama, Ngaree Ah Kit:

“For Indigenous Australians the Aboriginal flag has a very important political and legal status and is an important symbol.

“Flying it on such a busy intersection and giving it the opportunity to be seen by so many, in such a prominent position shows our commitment as a government to Indigenous Australians and to the Northern Territory.”
