Creating Jobs and Building Stronger Communities: Latest Round of CBF Grants Awarded

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government has awarded $4.8 million to local community organisations in the latest round of the Community Benefit Fund major grants.

CBF grants provide much needed funding for community organisations to continue to deliver services and recreational opportunities for Territorians as well as providing a much needed boost to the Territory economy. The CBF is funded by a levy on electronic gaming machines in licensed hotels.

Across the Territory, 44 community organisations will use the funding to support the purchase of equipment, new and upgraded infrastructure, improved transport and much more.

The Darwin Men’s Shed received $165,000 to relocate from Casuarina to a new premises in Winnellie. The Darwin Men’s Shed is part of the Australian network that provides a place for men to not only work on woodwork or metalwork projects but to make and sustain friendships while retaining an active mind and body.

Other recipients include Bima Wear Aboriginal Designs on the Tiwi Islands, which received funding for building maintenance and structural repairs. The $192,000 grant will provide jobs for contractors and will refresh Bima Wear’s premises for years to come.

Darwin Deckchair Cinema also received a $35,000 CBF grant to improve their dining seating – creating a more luxurious attraction for locals and visitors to enjoy.

The next Community Benefit Fund major grant round opens in January. Community Benefit Fund minor grants are available year round. To apply, visit https://nt.gov.au/community/community-grants-and-volunteers

Quotes from the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Natasha Fyles:

“The Community Benefit Fund is an important funding stream for local organisations to continue to provide community services, leisure activities and job-creating opportunities.

“Many of these organisations support events that enhance our lifestyle and help to draw visitors to sample the Territory, putting valuable dollars into our economy.

“We’ve supported local community organisations by overhauling the CBF funding model to make it more streamlined – maximising benefits for Territorians whilst reducing processing time for applicants.

“The next major grant funding round opens in January but minor grants are available all year round. I encourage Territory community organisations to apply.”
