Bruce Munro: Tropical Light Opens in Darwin

Office of the Chief Minister

Some 50,000 visitors are expected to make the trip to Darwin over coming months for Bruce Munro: Tropical Light, which is set to light up the CBD from tonight.

A celebration of the Top End’s Tropical Summer, the free exhibition features eight illuminated sculptures by world-renowned artist Bruce Munro, alongside the works of five local artists.

Over the next six months, visitors and locals will be able to immerse themselves each night in the stunning arts trail which snakes from the CBD through to the Waterfront.

People are encouraged to attend tonight’s opening celebrations, which will feature contemporary dance pieces, performances by the Darwin Larrakia-Belyuen dancers, live music, stories, a range of food and drink options, and more.

A free audio tour app has been developed for Bruce Munro: Tropical Light and is available to download on your smartphone by visiting www.tropicallight.com.au.

The app features stories from Bruce Munro, the Darwin artists and members of our Larrakia community, giving listeners a deep understanding of the inspiration behind Tropical Light.

Quotes from Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:

“Bruce Munro: Tropical Light is part of this Government’s vision to bring more people here to experience the Top End over our Tropical Summer season.

“This is the time when the Top End becomes alive – it’s lush, vibrant, moody and surprising. We anticipate an extra 50,000 visitors will head to the Top End over the course of the exhibition, providing a welcome boost to the local economy over this traditionally quieter period.

“We are investing an additional $40.78 million into festivals and events over four years as part of Turbocharging Tourism, recognising the important role they play in driving visitation and enhancing the liveability of our communities.

“This is a truly unique exhibition that captures the essence of tropical Darwin and puts it up in lights for all the world to experience.”

Quotes from Tropical Light artist, Bruce Munro:

“It’s great that Tropical Light is opening tonight and I want to extend a huge thank you to all the people involved in this exhibition for the launch and the next six months to come.

“It has been an amazing journey and it’s a privilege to be given the opportunity to create a world-first, city-wide exhibition for Darwin. This city has changed a great deal since my first visit on a camping trip in 1992.

“I hope Tropical Light attracts people from the Territory, Australia-wide and internationally to Darwin, which is an amazing city to be discovered.”
