COAG Energy Council Meeting & Establishment of Office of Sustainable Energy

Office of the Chief Minister

The Minister for Renewables, Energy and Essential Services, Dale Wakefield will represent the Territory today at the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Energy Council meeting in Perth.

The Energy Council is a forum of Commonwealth, states and territory, and New Zealand governments. Through the Energy Council, the Territory Government contributes to the development of national energy reforms.

Energy reforms – including solar and hydrogen - underpin economic development and jobs growth.  The Territory is well placed to be a significant player in national and international sustainable energy.

That is why the Territory Government has now created the Office of Sustainable Energy within the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation. This was through the redirection of existing government resources.

The Office of Sustainable Energy will coordinate energy policy and the implementation of renewables across Government. The office is already working on electricity market reforms, developing strategies for advancing the Territory’s target of 50% renewables by 2030, and seizing opportunities for the creation of cheap, reliable, and clean energy.

The office is also developing a Solar and Renewable Hydrogen investment attraction strategy for the Northern Territory.

Projects like Sun Cable’s $20B Asia Singapore Power Link show the incredible economic opportunity the Territory’s renewable resources present.

Quotes from Minister for Renewables, Energy & Essential Services, Dale Wakefield

“The worldwide transition to cheap, clean, renewable energy presents incredible economic opportunities for the Northern Territory. The Territory Labor Government understands this and is acting now to secure more local jobs in these industries of the future.

“Through the COAG Energy Council, the Territory Government participates in national energy reforms and broader opportunities for the Territory and Australia, including the national hydrogen strategy.

“Additionally, we have established the Office of Sustainable Energy to coordinate energy policy across Government and ensure that we seize the economic opportunities that new renewable industries will create. This includes the potential for thousands of new jobs.”
