Investing in Sport: Ross Park Oval Upgrades Completed

Office of the Chief Minister

The Alice Springs sporting community can now enjoy upgraded female friendly change rooms, toilets and canteen facilities at Ross Park Oval as part of the Territory Labor Government’s $6.2 million investment to improve community sporting infrastructure at seven Alice Springs sporting facilities.

The $6.2 million investment is supporting local jobs, with Alice Springs contractor, LTC Construction completing the works at Ross Park Oval and the tender to upgrade track and field amenities at Rhonda Diano oval recently awarded to local business, A.W. McLean.

The suite of infrastructure projects are helping local sporting and community groups to grow their participation by encouraging more juniors, women and girls to get involved.

The upgrades at Ross Park join four completed projects at Traeger Avenue Hockey pitch, Alice Springs Basketball Centre, Flynn Drive Oval and Jim McConville Oval, with Albrecht Oval upgrades in progress.

The Territory Labor Government continues to work with the Alice Springs Town Council to deliver the priority projects identified by the local community.

Quotes from Acting Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture:

“We know how important sport is to Territorians and we’re committed to opening up greater opportunities for junior and female participation - that’s why our Government has invested $6.2 million into a range of Alice Springs sporting infrastructure projects.

“Under the previous Government, it was the typical CLP boys club, they ignored the need to invest in female friendly amenities.

“We are investing in facilities that cater for the growth in women’s sports with new facilities at Larrakia Park and TIO Oval 2 in Darwin, and improved amenities at Ross Park, Flynn Drive and soon, Albrecht Oval in Alice Springs.

“We continue to work in collaboration with the Alice Springs Town Council to deliver these important local projects as investment in sporting assets means an investment in a more active and healthy community.”

Quotes from Member for Braitling, Dale Wakefield MLA:

“Our investment in our local sporting infrastructure supports the Alice Springs community by providing better quality sporting amenities and creating local jobs.

“Great facilities can help increase participation in sport, and the female friendly change rooms are an important part of the upgrades at Ross Park Oval.”

Quotes from Alice Springs Mayor, Damien Ryan:

“Council is very proud of the work done on this joint sporting infrastructure project to date, with five of the seven venues now completed.

“This significant project demonstrates that Council, NT Government, local contractors and sporting groups have worked together for the Alice Springs community.

“We are pleased to deliver this upgraded facility today, and are on track for more in the near future.”
