Turn Up for the Territory this Territory Day

Office of the Chief Minister

The new-look Territory Day celebrations have been revealed and Territorians are being asked to Turn Up for the Territory to show their support for each other during these unprecedented times.

Support your mates, support Territory businesses, support our entertainment sector and support our heroes.

  • Tune in to Some Like it Hot! Celebrating Our Territory on Channel 9 and Imparja to discover how our magnificent, unforgiving landscape has shaped strong, resilient people. You’ll hear the stories as told through the eyes of different generations of Territorians.

  • Vote in Music NT’s Territory Sounds Top 40 countdown, which celebrates the best of Territory artists as determined by voters. ABC Darwin, ABC Alice Springs and community radio partners will broadcast the countdown. Who will be Number One?

  • Tuck in to a meal through the Territory 10,000 initiative and support our hard-hit hospitality sector. Simply order from your favourite participating eatery (takeaway counts too) to be in with the chance to win some great prizes. If you own an eatery, add your business to the list of participating venues for your chance to win.

Let’s get 10,000 meals sold in the run-up to Territory Day from 24 June.

  • Dob in a mate who has been a Territory Hero through the COVID-19 pandemic.
We want to celebrate those people who exemplify what being a Territorian is all about. No contribution is too big or small.
It could be an unforgettable health worker who’s helped keep you safe, your favourite coffee shop that stayed open to make sure you got your daily caffeine fix, or the friends who helped entertain your kids while they were stuck at home.

  • Share in our stories through the Why I Love the Territory online series, featuring an inspiring group of people who choose to call the NT home. What makes them love the Territory?

  • Join in celebrating the next generation of Territorians through the Territory Day school video competition. Students can submit a short video about their love for the NT, with the Territory’s Black Rock Band providing the soundtrack. Entries close 19 June 2020.

  • Delve in to the NT News on Territory Day for your special edition pull-out Territory flag, and check out the Territory’s 42 Most Memorable Moments. Have they influenced your life? Do you remember them?

Quotes from Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Lauren Moss:

“Territory Day might look different this year, but we can still celebrate our special day and what makes the Territory great – our people, culture, landscapes, lifestyle and achievements.

“It is 42 years since self-government and the Territory has come a long way during those four decades. We are a unique place with a unique community, and the strength of that community has been increasingly highlighted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Thanks to that community spirit, the Territory is one of the safest places in Australia right now, and we look forward to celebrating that as much as self-government this Territory Day.

“We have a range of initiatives to celebrate Territory Day this year - choose the celebration that suits you best, or get involved in them all.”
