Wave Lagoon Reopens This Weekend

Office of the Chief Minister

The Darwin Waterfront’s Wave Lagoon will reopen this weekend on Saturday 20 June 2020 in time for school holidays.

To celebrate, there will be a Family Fun Beach Party reopening event in the Wave Lagoon on Saturday 27 June 2020, with roving entertainment, a kids’ circus workshop, music and beached-themed inflatables.  More details will be available on the Darwin Waterfront Facebook page next week.

The Wave Lagoon has been closed since 26 March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.  During this time, the Darwin Waterfront Corporation have taken the opportunity to conduct repairs, maintenance, and make improvements to the popular attraction.

The Wave Lagoon is open every day from 10am to 6pm.  For more information follow ‘Darwin Waterfront’ on Facebook or visit waterfront.nt.gov.au

Quotes from Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby:

“The Territory is the best place to be in Australia right now, thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of Territorians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our cafes, restaurants and bars are open for business and the Darwin Waterfront is a wonderful place for Territorians to bring the family and enjoy the beautiful dry season weather.

“The reopening of the popular Wave Lagoon in time for school holidays is great news for Territorians.”

Quotes from Darwin Waterfront Corporation General Manager, Sam Burke:

“The Wave Lagoon is now over ten years old, and these repairs were required to continue to operate safely.”

“The repair work cost approximately $200 000, which has been budgeted for within the corporation’s programmed works, and represented essential cash-flow for our local contractors during COVID-19.”

“The works were wholly completed by local contractors including Regional Asset Maintenance Services, Territory Construction Solutions, Pool Concepts, The Cool Guys, Fig Leaf Pool Products and Sign City.”

“The corporation is pleased to be able to reopen the Wave Lagoon for school holidays; providing another option for families in addition to our school holiday program, Recreation Lagoon, basketball and volleyball courts, and playground.”

“Restaurants and cafes have all reopened, and the Waterfront Beach Club continues to be a popular choice for locals to enjoy their food and drinks.”
