Palmerston Renal Unit Opens at new Palmerston Regional Hospital Site

Office of the Chief Minister

The Palmerston Renal Unit recommences services next week at a new site on the Palmerston Regional Hospital campus.

The move from the Palmerston Health Precinct to the Regional Hospital comes after the existing facility had passed its design life, resulting in increasing maintenance and running costs.

The relocation sees the service undertaken in a larger location with better access to co-located facilities and a modern, bright and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

Dialysis patients require treatment for several hours at a time, multiple times per week, and the new site allows for a more positive patient treatment experience.

Palmerston patients have been treated at either the Nightcliff Renal Unit or Home Therapies Unit at Royal Darwin Hospital, with both extending opening hours during this time of transition.

The Palmerston Renal Unit at the Regional Hospital will accommodate eight dialysis chairs.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Health, Natasha Fyles:

“The Territory Labor Government prioritises high quality health care for all Territorians, and has made significant advancements in renal services in this term.

“We have launched the NT Renal Strategy, relocated the Palmerston service to a new facility within the hospital precinct, redeveloped Nightcliff Renal, built Pirlangimpi Renal, and have invested in renal in Central Australia to ensure services are accessible to more Territorians.

“Renal dialysis is a necessity for those living with end-stage kidney disease; and high quality, convenient and appropriate service provision is essential for those who require the treatment – relocating this treatment centre to the Palmerston Regional Hospital allows for this.

“We recognise renal services are lifesaving and how many Territorians rely on them. The Palmerston Unit is extremely well utilised by local residents and this upgraded facility is timely.”
