Creating Economic Opportunities – Climate Change Response Released

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government knows that the community wants action on climate change to deliver low-cost clean energy, create jobs for Territorians and to protect our natural assets.

Today we have released our Climate Change Response: Towards 2050 and three-year action plan, delivering on a key election commitment and providing a comprehensive, evidence-based response that captures the opportunities for Territorians and provides practical ways to minimise climate-risk.

Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the importance of coming together as a community, working alongside experts to inform our response, and partnering with stakeholders to build our pathway forward. Our response to climate change is no different.

We will work together as a community to respond to and manage risk, transform the way we do business, embrace new opportunities and make bold decisions.

This evidence-based Climate Change Response provides the long-term vision required to protect the Territory and capitalise on the economic opportunities created by climate-smart action.

The Response is built around four key objectives:

  1. Reducing emissions to achieve net zero emissions target by 2050
  2. Building a resilient Territory that adapts and responds to the impacts of climate change
  3. Unlocking the opportunities from a low-carbon future
  4. Informing and involving all Territorians in the climate change response.

The Territory Labor Government has established the Office of Climate Change and the Office of Sustainable Energy, who will implement the Climate Change Response and deliver Government’s net zero emissions target by 2050 and 50% renewable energy target by 2030.

The Climate Change Response has been released following extensive community and stakeholder engagement.

Quotes from the Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government knows that climate-smart policy is smart economic policy that will create new jobs for Territorians and deliver significant cost-savings to Territorians.

“Our Labor Government’s strong environmental policy is securing our natural assets and unlocking social, cultural, and economic opportunities for Territorians.

“Terry Mills and the CLP have an appalling track record on climate change. They scrapped the climate change and renewables policy while in Government, fought against federal Government action on climate change, and put our water and environment at risk with their reckless policies.

“You simply can’t trust Mills and the CLP to protect our environment or act on climate change.”
