First Transitional Housing Program Tenants Move into The Gap

Office of the Chief Minister

A new Transitional Housing Program has commenced in Alice Springs with the first residents moving into a new housing complex located on South Terrace, The Gap.

Formerly used as a short-stay hostel, the unit complex on South Terrace has been repurposed as transitional accommodation for older women and families with young children.

The complex features 20 one and two-bedroom units recently refurbished under the Territory Labor Government’s $100 million public housing stimulus program, with each unit receiving new kitchens, floors and privacy fencing.

The facility will be operated by the Central Australian Affordable Housing Company (CAAHC), who will provide accommodation, tenancy support and referral services to help transition residents into long-term tenancies.

The Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group provided advice and support during the establishment of the program and will continue to work alongside CAAHC and the residents to provide advice and mentorship to residents.

Quotes from Minister for Urban Housing, Kate Worden

“We know that stable housing can lead  to better education, better employment prospects, improved  health and community outcomes,  and that’s why the Territory Labor Government invests  in programs like this and in specialist homelessness services.

“The South Terrace housing complex combined with a Transitional Housing Program will help the residents’ transition into longer-term housing.

“This service is specifically for older single women and young parents with children who are at risk of homelessness and helping our most vulnerable members of our community to find their way into safe, stable and affordable housing is the right thing to do.”

Quotes from Central Australian Affordable Housing Company CEO, John McBryde

“The first group of tenants have moved in, marking the start of the Transitional Housing Program.

“The Central Australian Affordable Housing Company’s purpose is to improve lives by providing safe and affordable homes. We are really excited for the opportunity to deliver our Transitional Housing Program.”
