Turbocharging Tourism: Electricity Network Upgrades Underway for Jabiru

Office of the Chief Minister

The township of Jabiru is taking another big step towards transitioning into a major tourism hub, with $10 million set aside to carry out upgrades and repairs to its electricity network.

The upgrades are funded through the Territory Labor Government’s $135.5 million investment in Jabiru, which will be pivotal in establishing the township as a vibrant cultural centre in the heart of Kakadu and the West Arnhem Region.

The works will be completed over the next two years.

Along with keeping Territory tradies on the tools, the upgrades will ensure Jabiru’s electricity network is ready to receive new generation supplied by a hybrid power station, with a renewable energy component of at least 50 per cent.

The major procurement process for the hybrid power station will be finalised in the New Year, with the plant to be up and running by the end of 2021.

As well as investing in the new electricity network, the Territory Government is also upgrading other services in the town, including a new education precinct, a multi-use health clinic, the NBN rollout, mobile connectivity, and a government services hub.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Michael Gunner:

“Jabiru has the potential to be a real draw card for Territorians and visitors alike.

“The Territory Labor Government’s ongoing investment in critical services and infrastructure is helping the township get there, to ensure it prospers sustainably for years to come.

“These upgrades will not only mean Jabiru residents have access to the very best services, but work will continue to flow for local tradies.

“We know how important it is to keep Territorians working during the coronavirus crisis, and this investment will see plenty of local jobs in the pipeline.”
