Support Local Seafood this Easter

Office of the Chief Minister

With Easter only a few sleeps away, Territorians are encouraged to support local when it comes to enjoying their seasonal feast.

Easter is traditionally a popular time for families to prepare a seafood spread, or dine on local produce when visiting restaurants.

Buying local seafood means supporting local industries and jobs.

The Territory’s commercial fishing and aquaculture operators inject $136 million into the NT economy each year, which supports around 1,000 jobs.

For every 100 jobs in the seafood industry, a further 50 are created elsewhere.

Every $1 million produced by the seafood industry creates an extra $400,000 through related services, such as fuel, repairs and equipment.

The Territory has some of the most sustainable and well-managed fisheries in the world, and as a result, we are renowned for the quality of our seafood caught in pristine local waters.

Commercial fishing ensures there is fresh seafood for Territorians while supporting the economy and small businesses.

Quotes from Minister for Small Business, Paul Kirby:

“I encourage all Territorians to buy local seafood this Easter long weekend.

“We know how important the commercial fishing sector is, not only for our dinner plates, but also for local jobs.

“More than $130 million dollars is injected into our economy as a result of the industry every year, which is having flow-on benefits right across the Territory.

“The Territory Labor Government is committed to working with the seafood industry to sustainably develop our fisheries for long term community benefit.”

Quotes from Northern Territory Seafood Council, Chief Executive Officer, Katherine Winchester:

“Easter is one of the most popular times for a family seafood feast and you can always identify local seafood by looking for the ‘Support NT Caught’ logo.

“Territorians are fortunate to have access to a variety of delicious local species, including prawns, barramundi, threadfin, mud crab and tropical snappers – and I encourage everyone to get in early.”
