Central Palmerston Area Plan Released

Office of the Chief Minister

Palmerston is the family capital of the Territory.

Following wide consultation, the Territory Government and the Northern Territory Planning Commission have released the Central Palmerston Area Plan.

The Area Plan provides a decision-making framework to inform future rezoning and development decisions; it gives guidance, certainty and confidence to residents, property owners and decision makers. An Area Plan is important to help achieve a long-term vision for the city centre and surrounding areas.

Simply put, it helps us plan for the future.

Highlights of the plan include:

-       Prioritising investment in the Palmerston City Centre as an employment, living and entertainment hub;

-       Retaining Yarrawonga as a key service commercial, industry and employment hub for the Darwin Region;

-       Promoting a connected, multi-modal movement and transport network by creating further bike paths along Roystonea Avenue; and

-       Fostering improved amenity to create a sense of place for residents, visitors and community.

The Territory Labor Government values the community of Palmerston – we have built a new Police Station, Hospital and School, and development of the Regional Palmerston Fire station is also underway.

Quotes from the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory is growing; we have private investment projects underway, and we have our communities expanding.

“As a Government, we value the people of Palmerston. We want to see good, community minded developments occur.

“The Central Palmerston Area Plan sets out a well thought out framework on how to accomplish healthy and positive development. This will support further jobs with the construction of new homes, community centres and parkland.

“We want to support planning and development projects in the Territory that meet community expectations.”

Quotes from the Northern Territory Planning Commission Chairman Dr David Ritchie:

“The community of Palmerston have shaped this plan. We heard feedback from the community, across three stages of community consultation. Their feedback is incorporated in this plan and so will now influence the future planning for Central Palmerston.”
