Greenhouse Gas Emissions Tender Awarded

Office of the Chief Minister

The Territory Labor Government is focussed on tackling climate change to deliver affordable clean energy, create jobs and protect our natural assets.

To make worthwhile change, data and information need to be sourced. This is why the Territory Government has recently awarded the Greenhouse Gas Emission Tender to local Territory businesses.

Climate experts Point Advisory, will work with Territory businesses Aboriginal Carbon Foundation and Institute for Sensible Transport, to provide detailed analysis of the Northern Territory’s greenhouse gas emissions profile.

Over the next six months, the local businesses will:

  • Investigate the NT’s greenhouse gas emissions profile into the future, based upon different emission scenarios (reflecting development scenarios as well as proposed mitigation); and
  • Identify the most cost effective pathway for the Territory to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.

This work will inform an Emissions Reduction Strategy for the Northern Territory.

The awarding of this tender falls under priority 1.1.1 of the Territory Government’s Climate Change Response three-year Action Plan and will assist in developing a decarbonisation plan, as recommended by the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission.

This will complement work being undertaken by a team of local sub-contractors to advise Government on a roadmap of how to make more efficient commercial buildings in the NT.

Quotes from the Minister for Climate Change, Eva Lawler:

“The Territory Labor Government knows that climate-smart policy is smart economic policy that will create new local jobs and deliver significant cost-savings to Territorians.

“The NT Government is taking its global responsibilities seriously to urgently tackle climate change and protect the environment for future generations, with the awarding of this tender.

“Understanding our greenhouse gas emissions will support the Territory in developing a decarbonisation plan that will strengthen our already strong environmental policies, while also securing our natural assets and unlocking social, cultural and economic opportunities for Territorians.”
