New Public Housing Safety Officers for Tennant Creek

Office of the Chief Minister

Three new Public Housing Safety Officers (PHSOs) have begun training this week, before commencing operational duties in Tennant Creek in July.

The Northern Territory Government is implementing effective measures to counter disruptive and antisocial behaviour in and around public housing.

PHSOs work with tenants, neighbours, other Government staff, Northern Territory Police personnel and visitors to prevent and respond to antisocial behaviour in and around public housing.

This includes investigating complaints of antisocial behaviour in and around public housing, supporting tenants to maintain effective tenancies, and promoting community safety.

The Public Housing Safety Strategy is now in its ninth year. The Strategy is aimed at mitigating and addressing disruptive and antisocial behaviour using a range of preventative initiatives.

These initiatives include:

  • Public Housing Safety Officers operating in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek;
  • Red Card and Visitor Management policies;
  • Acceptable Behaviour Agreements; and
  • Cross-agency collaboration with the Northern Territory (NT) Police.

Public Housing Safety Officers are first line of response in addressing disruptive and antisocial behaviour.

Quotes attributed to the Minister for Territory Families and Urban Housing, Kate Worden:

“Our Public Housing Safety Officers play a very important role in our Territory community – they approach the job with a great attitude, but can only do their work with the cooperation of the wider community.

“They have a real connection to the community and assist public housing tenants, the neighbours and the wider community. It has been great to see such a passionate team, and we commend all the public housing safety officers for the hard work they do, throughout the greater Darwin region, Kathrine, Tenant Creek and Alice Springs.

“During the recruitment of the three new PHSOs, we have provided support with Public Housing Safety Officers rostered on and dispatched from Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine to attend Tennant Creek.”
