Transit Systems welcomed to the Top End

Minister for Transport, Peter Styles, has today welcomed Transit Systems to Darwin as they start as the operator of the Darwin Bus Service.

Transit Systems Pty Ltd was chosen via a rigorous public tender process and the Country Liberals Government welcomes them to the Darwin community.

Mr Styles said that Transit Systems will maintain an efficient bus service in Darwin and the new contract will provide a saving of almost 13 per cent per kilometre for taxpayers.

“Government wants to get out of the way of business. The Darwin Bus Service is the last of the Territory’s bus service routes that was operated by a Government Department,” Mr Styles said.

“All Darwin Bus Service staff will be offered employment with the same rates of pay and job conditions.

“Public transport users will enjoy exactly the same level of service – all routes and fares will remain the same.

“Improving public transport systems is a key component of the Northern Territory Government’s strategic priorities as an enabler of economic and social development.

“This decision means that Government can focus on its role to set the strategic direction and work on improving the design and delivery of efficient transport services.

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Darwin Bus Service employees over many years with the Department of Transport. I am confident that they will continue to deliver quality services with Transit Systems.”

Transit Systems Pty Ltd, a member of the Transit Systems Group of Companies, is a 100% Australian owned family business that commenced its operations in Perth 18 years ago under the Swan Transit brand. Transit Systems have established a new company called Territory Transit as their branding for the Darwin service.
